Respiratory Therapy

Respiratory Therapists are healthcare professionals who specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of respiratory diseases. They work closely with physicians and other healthcare professionals to develop personalized treatment plans for patients. Respiratory Therapists must have a strong understanding of respiratory anatomy and physiology to ensure accurate diagnosis and treatment. The job requires a minimum of an associate's degree in respiratory therapy and a certification in respiratory therapy.

General Requirements

Respiratory therapists typically have an associate's or bachelor's degree in respiratory therapy or a related field, and they must be certified by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) as a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) and a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT).

Respiratory Therapy Task & Duties

Respiratory therapists perform a variety of duties, including:

  • Assessing patients' respiratory status and developing treatment plans
  • Administering oxygen therapy, aerosol therapy, and other respiratory treatments
  • Performing diagnostic tests, such as pulmonary function tests and arterial blood gas analysis
  • Monitoring patients' progress and adjusting treatment as needed
  • Providing education and support to patients and their families
